Ice maker repair

An ice maker needs three things: water at enough pressure, a mold cold enough to freeze it, and a working module to eject the cubes. Most no-ice calls are a water problem, such as a clogged filter, a kinked line or a failed inlet valve, rather than the ice maker itself.

Calls answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Calls are routed to an independent appliance repair technician. Reviewed .

What the technician tests

  1. Water pressure

Flow at the valve is measured, because low pressure produces symptoms that look like a failed part.

  2. Valve and module

The valve coil and the ice maker are tested electrically and run through a test cycle.

  3. Temperature

The mold and freezer temperatures are checked to rule out a cooling problem.

The parts of the ice and water system

Water enters through an electric inlet valve at the back of the refrigerator, passes through the filter, fills the mold, freezes, and is pushed out into the bin by a motor and heater. A fault at any of those steps stops the ice.

Supply line
Usually a small copper or braided line from a saddle or angle valve under the sink or in the basement.
Inlet valve
Opens for a few seconds per cycle. Low pressure or a failing coil gives small, hollow or no cubes.
Ice maker module
Motor, heater and sensor in one assembly. Usually replaced as a unit.
Dispenser
Auger motor, door flap and actuator switch, which fail separately from the ice maker.

What changes an ice maker job

Location of the module
Door-mounted ice makers on French-door models are harder to reach than freezer-mounted ones.
The supply line
If the line itself is damaged, it may need rerunning from the shutoff valve.
Water quality
Hard water scales valves and molds, so repeat failures may need a filter or softener fix too.

Does an ice maker fault need fast attention?

  • Act now

Water is pooling on the floor

Close the supply valve now to protect the floor, then book a repair.

  • This week

No ice but the freezer is cold and dry

    Book a repair when convenient.

  • Act now

    The freezer is also warm

Treat it as refrigerator repair, not an ice maker fault.

Checks you can make first

  1. Confirm it is on

Most ice makers have a switch or a wire arm. A raised arm means off.

  2. Check the freezer temperature

Ice makers need the freezer at about 0 to 5 °F. A warm freezer is a refrigeration fault, not an ice maker fault.

  3. Replace an old filter

Manufacturers commonly suggest a new filter about every six months. A clogged one starves the ice maker first.

  4. Look at the supply valve

Make sure the shutoff valve feeding the line is fully open and the line behind the refrigerator is not kinked.

Ice and water parts that are replaced most

Water inlet valve
The most common cause of both no ice and leaks.
Ice maker assembly
Replaced when the motor or heater fails or the module stops cycling.
Supply line
Plastic lines become brittle and crack. Braided stainless lines last longer.
Dispenser auger motor
Turns the auger that pushes ice out. Seizes when ice melts and refreezes in the bin.

Ice Maker Repair: common questions

How long does a new ice maker take to make ice?

Many manufacturers say to allow up to 24 hours after installation or a reset before the first full batch, and to discard the first few batches.

Can I replace the ice maker myself?

Some modules unplug and swap with a few screws. Work with the refrigerator unplugged and the water off. Valve and line repairs behind the unit are best left to a technician if you are not comfortable with them.

Why does my ice taste bad?

An old filter, food odors in the freezer or ice left in the bin for weeks. Replace the filter and empty the bin before assuming a repair is needed.

Does a refrigerator need a water line to work?

No. The refrigerator cools without it. Only the ice maker and dispenser need water, and they can be switched off if there is no line.
