Washer problem

Why won't my washer drain?

On front-loaders, a clogged drain pump filter is the most common cause, and you can usually clear it in a few minutes. On top-loaders, look at the drain hose and the lid switch. If the pump hums but no water moves, the pump itself may be jammed or failed.

The drain path in four parts: washer not draining

Water leaves the tub through a filter, a pump and a hose into the standpipe or laundry sink. A blockage or failure anywhere along that path leaves water in the drum.

Filter
Catches coins, hair ties and socks on front-loaders.
Pump
Hums when jammed; silent when the motor or its signal fails.
Hose and standpipe
Kinked hoses and clogged standpipes back water up.

Clearing it safely: washer not draining

Unplug the washer first. Expect a lot of water from the filter.

  1. Prepare

Towels on the floor and a shallow pan in front of the access door.

  2. Drain the small tube

Many front-loaders have a small hose next to the filter to drain water slowly.

  3. Unscrew the filter

Turn it slowly, remove debris, rinse and refit firmly.

  4. Check the hose

Pull the washer out and straighten any kink in the drain hose.

  5. Run drain and spin

Test with an empty drain and spin cycle.

Urgency: washer not draining

  • Act now

    Water overflowing from the standpipe

Stop the cycle; call a plumber for the drain.

  • This week

Washer full of water, no leak

Clear the filter; book a washer repair if it fails.

Avoid: washer not draining

  • Opening the door with water inside

On front-loaders, water pours out. Drain through the filter first.

  • Chemical drain cleaners in the washer

They damage seals and the pump.

What to tell the technician about the washer

Say whether you cleared the pump filter and what came out, whether the pump hums, and whether the drain or a nearby sink backs up when the washer drains. An overflowing standpipe points to a household drain problem rather than the washer.

Give the error code if the display shows one, and the model number. If the washer will not unlock with water inside, do not force the door; the technician can drain it safely.

Questions people ask: washer not draining

How often should I clean the washer pump filter?

Many manuals suggest every few months, or whenever drain errors appear.

Why does my washer drain slowly?

A partly blocked filter, a kinked hose or a weak pump.

Can too much detergent stop draining?

Excess suds can trigger drain and spin errors on HE washers. Use the recommended amount of HE detergent.

Can a clogged house drain look like a washer problem?

Yes. If the standpipe overflows or a nearby sink gurgles while the washer drains, the blockage is in the household drain, which is a job for a plumber.

This page is general safety information, not a diagnosis. Appliances combine electricity, water and sometimes gas. If you are unsure whether something is safe, unplug it or switch it off at the breaker and have a technician inspect it. For a gas smell, leave and call 911 or the gas utility.
