Refrigerator problem

Why is my refrigerator not cooling?

If the freezer is still cold, the problem is almost always air not reaching the fresh-food side: a frosted coil, a stopped fan or a stuck damper. If both sides are warm, look at the condenser, the compressor and the controls. Keep the doors shut while you work it out.

Calls answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Calls are routed to an independent appliance repair technician. Reviewed .

The pattern tells you where to look: refrigerator not cooling

Cold air is made at the freezer coil and blown into the fresh-food section. Which side is warm, and whether you hear the compressor and fans, narrows the cause before anything is opened.

Freezer cold, fridge warm
Airflow fault: frosted evaporator coil from a defrost failure, a stopped evaporator fan, or a stuck damper.
Both warm, compressor running
Dirty condenser, stopped condenser fan, or a refrigerant problem.
Both warm, silent or clicking
Start relay, compressor, control board, or no power.

  1. Read a thermometer

Put an appliance thermometer in a glass of water on the middle shelf. Above 40 °F is too warm (FDA).

  2. Check the dial

Make sure the control was not turned down or switched to a vacation or demo mode.

  3. Clear the vents

Move food away from the air outlets in both compartments.

  4. Clean the condenser

Unplug the fridge, then vacuum the coil under or behind it.

  5. Listen

Note whether the fans run with the door switch pressed. It helps the technician.

How fast do you need help?: refrigerator not cooling

  • Act now

Above 40 °F with perishables or medicines inside

Move them to a cooler with ice and call for same-day repair.

  • This week

Slowly warming, still under 40 °F

Clean the condenser and book a refrigerator repair.

What not to do: refrigerator not cooling

  • Chipping ice off the coil

Sharp tools puncture coils, turning a defrost repair into a sealed-system failure.

  • Turning the dial to coldest

It does not fix an airflow fault and can freeze the fresh-food side once repaired.

  • Opening the doors to check

Each opening lets cold air out. Check once and keep them closed.

Questions people ask: refrigerator not cooling

Can a defrost problem fix itself?

Unplugging the fridge for a day melts the frost and often restores cooling for a few days, which confirms a defrost fault. It comes back until the failed part is replaced.

How long is food safe?

About four hours with the door closed, according to the USDA. Perishables above 40 °F for over two hours should be discarded.

Why is my new refrigerator not cold yet?

New refrigerators can take up to 24 hours to reach temperature. Wait before loading it fully.

This page is general safety information, not a diagnosis. Appliances combine electricity, water and sometimes gas. If you are unsure whether something is safe, unplug it or switch it off at the breaker and have a technician inspect it. For a gas smell, leave and call 911 or the gas utility.
