Refrigerator problem

Why is my refrigerator leaking water?

Water inside the fresh-food section usually comes from a blocked defrost drain. Water under the front of the fridge can be the drain pan or the ice maker. Water at the back usually means the supply line or inlet valve. Where the water is tells you the source.

Three sources cover most leaks: refrigerator leaking water

Defrost water, supply water for the ice maker and dispenser, and condensation. Each leaves water in a different place.

Inside, under the crisper drawers
Defrost drain blocked by food debris or ice.
Under the front
Cracked drain pan, or a dispenser or ice maker overflow.
At the back or under the unit
Supply line or inlet valve leak.

Safe first steps: refrigerator leaking water

  1. Shut off the water

Close the valve feeding the fridge line if water is at the back.

  2. Reseat the filter

Remove and reinstall the water filter firmly.

  3. Check the drain hole

In many models a small drain at the back of the fresh-food floor can be cleared with warm water and a turkey baster.

  4. Level the fridge

Many fridges should tilt slightly back so doors close and water drains. The manual gives the method.

Avoid: refrigerator leaking water

  • Ignoring a slow leak

Hidden leaks under wood and laminate floors cause far more damage than the original fault.

  • Overtightening plastic fittings

They crack. Hand tight plus a quarter turn is usually enough.

Watch for hidden water damage

A refrigerator leak can run under flooring for weeks before it shows. Signs include cupped or soft wood and laminate near the fridge, a musty smell, and stains on the ceiling below if the kitchen is upstairs. Pull the refrigerator out carefully, on a protected floor, and look at the subfloor if you suspect a slow leak.

Once the leak is fixed, dry the area thoroughly with fans before pushing the refrigerator back. If flooring has been soaked for a long time, a restoration company can check for moisture inside the floor and walls.

Questions people ask: refrigerator leaking water

Is a leaking fridge dangerous?

Water near outlets and cords is a shock risk. Keep the area dry and unplug the fridge if water is near the plug.

Why does my fridge leak after defrosting?

Defrost water is meant to run into the drain pan underneath. If the drain is blocked, it overflows inside.

Can I use the fridge without the water line?

Yes. Close the valve and switch off the ice maker. The fridge still cools.

This page is general safety information, not a diagnosis. Appliances combine electricity, water and sometimes gas. If you are unsure whether something is safe, unplug it or switch it off at the breaker and have a technician inspect it. For a gas smell, leave and call 911 or the gas utility.
